Free churn rate calculator

Evoriqa's free churn rate calculator shows how many customers you lost, and how many you kept. Enter your customers at the start and end of a period, plus the new ones you gained. You get churn and the customer retention rate. The maths runs in your browser, and nothing you type is sent anywhere.

Everyone you had on the first day of the period.

Everyone you had on the last day, new customers included.

Customers who joined during the period and are still with you. Leave blank for none.

Churn 20%, retention 80% (40 of 200 customers lost)

Churn counts only the customers you had at the start of the period. New customers are taken out of the end count first.

How churn and retention are worked out

Both use customers at the start of the period as the base. They always add up to 100%.

Customer retention rate

Retention = (end − new) ÷ start × 100

200 at the start, 190 at the end and 30 new gives 160 kept. That is 80% retention.

Churn rate

Churn = 100% − retention

The same example loses 40 of 200 customers, so churn is 20%.

What it leaves out

This counts people, not money. A lost big customer and a lost small one count the same. It also ignores customers who join and leave inside the period. If you count customers who joined and already left, churn will read higher.

How to calculate your churn rate

  1. 01

    Pick a period

Choose a month, a quarter or a year. Use the same length each time, because churn for different periods cannot be compared.
  2. 02

    Count customers at the start

Enter how many customers you had on the first day of the period. This is the base that churn is measured against.
  3. 03

    Count customers at the end

Enter how many you have on the last day. This count includes anyone who joined during the period.
  4. 04

    Enter your new customers

Type how many customers joined during the period and are still with you. They are taken out of the end count, so they cannot hide losses.

Frequently asked questions

What is churn rate?

Churn rate is the share of the customers you had at the start of a period who are gone by the end of it.

How do you calculate churn rate?

Take customers at the end, remove new customers, and divide by customers at the start. That is retention. Churn is 100% minus retention.

What is customer retention rate?

Customer retention rate is the share of your starting customers you kept. It is the mirror of churn, so the two always add up to 100%.

Why remove new customers from the end count?

New customers were not there at the start. Leaving them in would make you look like you kept customers you actually lost.

Can the calculator show negative churn?

No. This is customer churn, counted in people, so it runs from 0% to 100%. Revenue-based measures can differ and are not covered here.

What is a good churn rate?

There is no single target. It depends on your market, your pricing and your period. Compare your churn with your own past figures.

How is churn linked to satisfaction?

Unhappy customers are more likely to leave. Track satisfaction with the CSAT and NPS calculators, and watch whether churn moves with them.

Does the calculator save my numbers?

No. The maths runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent to Evoriqa. Site analytics records only that a result was copied.
