Meta documents ig.me links that open a message thread. They are described for professional accounts. Meta says they are not supported on Instagram Web. Its two pages give different shapes, so we do not guess. A profile link works for every account.

Can the code open a direct message instead?

Will the code still work if I change my username?
No. The handle is part of the link, so a new username needs a new code. Reprint anything that carries the old one.
What characters can a handle contain?
Instagram's help page lists letters, numbers, periods and underscores. This tool also stops at 30 characters, a guard we could not confirm in Meta's pages.
Where does an Instagram QR code work best?
Where people are waiting and have a phone: the counter, a table card, a receipt or a market stall. It adds little on Instagram itself.
