How to format text in WhatsApp
- 01
Type or paste your message
Write it in the box. The preview beside it shows how WhatsApp will roughly display it, and updates as you type. - 02
Select the words to format
Highlight a word or a sentence, then press Bold, Italic, Strikethrough or Monospace. With nothing selected, the button formats the whole message line by line. - 03
Add quotes and lists
Put the cursor in a line, or select several, and press Quote, Bullet list or Numbered list. Pressing the same button again changes nothing, and switching between list types swaps the marker. - 04
Copy it into WhatsApp
Press Copy message and paste it into a chat. WhatsApp reads the characters you copied and shows the formatting itself, so there is no special font to install.

Frequently asked questions
How do I make text bold in WhatsApp?
Put an asterisk on each side of the words, like *this*, and WhatsApp shows them in bold. For italic use underscores, for strikethrough use tildes, and for monospace use three backticks. This tool adds the characters for you from the selection.
Does this change the font, or use special Unicode letters?
No. It adds the plain characters WhatsApp itself reads, so the formatting is real WhatsApp formatting. Fancy Unicode fonts can be unreadable to screen readers and to people whose devices lack the characters.
Which formats does WhatsApp support?
Bold, italic, strikethrough, monospace, bulleted and numbered lists, block quotes and inline code. Each uses a short marker typed around or before your text. The cheat sheet on this page lists them all.
Why does my formatting not show in the message?
WhatsApp needs the mark directly against the words, with no space inside it: *bold* works, * bold * does not. A mark also does not carry across a line break, so each line needs its own pair. This tool follows both rules.
Is anything I type sent or stored?
No. The text is formatted and previewed in your browser, and nothing is sent to Evoriqa. Site analytics records only which format button was pressed, never your text.
Is the preview exactly what WhatsApp shows?
It is close, not identical. WhatsApp updates its formatting from time to time and differs a little between phones, web and desktop. Send yourself a test message if the exact look matters.
