How Much Does an Answering Service Cost? Human vs AI in 2026
Evoriqa Team · November 3, 2026 · 4 min read

A human answering service usually costs a few dollars per minute or per call, which for a small business adds up to hundreds of dollars a month. An AI answering service costs a fraction of that per minute, with the trade-off that a person isn't on the line. This guide uses the vendors' own published prices. We build Evoriqa, an AI answering service, so here is how we keep comparisons honest.
The short answer
Human answering services we checked publish prices from about $3.45 to $10 per minute or call. AI answering is far cheaper per minute. The real question is how many calls you get and how many truly need a person.
How answering services charge
There are three common models:
- Per minute. You buy a bundle of minutes each month. Overage is billed on top, or you move up a plan.
- Per call. You pay for each call answered, whatever its length.
- Flat monthly. Common for AI services: a plan with an allowance, then top-ups.
Per-minute plans reward short calls. Per-call plans suit businesses whose calls run long.

The per-unit column is our arithmetic from each plan's price and allowance. Ruby's pricing page (November 2026) says it charges no fees for activation, onboarding or setup. Check each vendor's own page before you buy: prices change.
What AI answering costs
An AI answering service answers every call itself, from your own business information. It books appointments, takes messages and transfers the calls you choose to a person.
Evoriqa includes its AI voice agent on every plan:
| Plan | Price | Voice minutes, if voice uses the whole allowance |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0, no card | 10 a month |
| Starter | $29/mo | about 120 a month |
| Pro | $99/mo | about 520 a month |
| Business | $399/mo | about 2,100 a month |

Chat and voice share one credit pool, so these are the most minutes each plan funds. On Starter that works out to about $0.24 a minute. Your phone line comes from Telnyx or Infobip and is billed by them separately. For a vendor-by-vendor look at AI pricing, see how much an AI receptionist costs.
A worked example
Say you get 100 calls a month, each around two minutes: 200 minutes in total.
- Ruby, 200-minute plan: $720 a month, read November 2026.
- Smith.ai Human Starter: 30 calls are included for $300, read September 2026. Your other 70 calls would need a bigger plan.
- Evoriqa Pro: $99 a month covers up to about 520 voice minutes, plus the line's own cost.
This is our arithmetic from published prices. Your call length and volume will change the result. The ROI calculator lets you try your own numbers.
What drives the bill up
- Call length. On per-minute plans, a few long calls cost more than many short ones.
- After-hours volume. Check whether nights and weekends cost extra. Ruby's pricing page (November 2026) says it charges nothing extra for coverage at certain times.
- Extra tasks. Check whether booking, intake forms and call transfers are included or billed on top.
- Overage. Going past your bundle often costs more per minute than the bundle did.
Questions to ask before you sign
Whichever kind of service you choose, these questions show the real price:
- What counts as a minute or a call? Ask whether time on hold, transfers and wrong numbers are billed.
- What happens when I go over? Find the overage rate, or whether you are moved up a plan automatically.
- Is there a minimum term? Monthly billing lets you stop if it doesn't work. An annual contract may be cheaper but locks you in.
- Which tasks are included? Booking, message-taking, intake questions and transfers are sometimes priced separately.
- How do I see what happened? Ask for call logs or transcripts, so you can check the service against your own records.
- Can I try it on real calls? A free plan or trial on your own number tells you more than any demo.
Human or AI: which to choose
Choose a human answering service when callers need empathy and judgement on most calls, such as emergencies, distressed clients or complex intake.
Choose AI when most calls are the same questions, bookings and messages. It answers at any hour, never puts anyone on hold, and hands the calls that need a person to your team.
Many businesses mix the two: AI takes the routine calls, and a person handles the rest. With Evoriqa you set which calls transfer, and to which number.
