AI Credits: How Usage-Based AI Pricing Works

AI credits are a usage-based billing unit that meters each AI action against its real model cost, so you pay for what you use rather than a flat per-seat fee.

AI credits are a usage-based billing unit for AI-powered software. Instead of charging a flat fee per user, a product meters the work its AI does (each answer, action, or generation) and deducts credits that map to the underlying cost of running the model. You buy or are allotted a pool of credits, and you spend them as the AI works.

The model exists because AI has a real marginal cost that traditional software does not. A conventional SaaS seat costs the vendor roughly the same whether you use it lightly or heavily, so per-seat pricing works. An AI feature costs money every time it runs — the model provider charges for the tokens processed — so a flat fee either overcharges light users or loses money on heavy ones. Credits pass that variable cost through in a unit customers can see and control.

Why not just count messages

Credits usually sit a layer beneath "messages" or "conversations" because not all messages cost the same. A short answer from a small model is cheap; a long answer that retrieved many documents and called a large model is not. Pricing purely per message forces the vendor to average, overcharging the simple interactions to cover the expensive ones. A credit that tracks actual model cost is more honest, though it asks the buyer to think in a less familiar unit. That is why good implementations translate credits back into an approximate message range.

Reading a credit-based plan

To compare credit-based pricing, look past the credit numbers to what they buy: the approximate volume of real interactions, what happens when you run out, and whether unused credits expire. Watch for spend controls too: the ability to cap usage per team or per client is what keeps a usage-based bill from surprising you.

AI credits in Evoriqa

Evoriqa meters usage as AI credits mapped to real provider cost, with the allowances published on its plans: Starter includes 150,000 credits a month (roughly 2,400–4,200 messages), Pro 1,000,000 (roughly 16,000–28,000), and Business 4,000,000 (roughly 65,000–114,000). One-time top-up packs at the same rates cover a busy month and never expire. Per-workspace and per-client spend caps keep usage bounded, and when a limit is reached the agent shows a friendly message rather than breaking. For agencies, credits are pooled across client workspaces with per-client caps, so one heavy client cannot drain the rest.

To size a plan, start from the support volume you already handle each month rather than from the credit numbers. Count the conversations your team answers, assume the agent will resolve the routine share of them, and compare that figure against the message ranges above.
